A comprehensive guide to PMI Talent Triangle

Obtaining a PMP certification is a huge step in one's professional growth. But that is not the end of the PMP certification journey. A PMP Certified Professional must renew his/her credentials every three years to maintain the PMP certification. This can be done by meeting the PDU requirements under PMI's Continuing Certification Requirements (CCR).

The ever-competitive and complicated global market demand more than just technical skills. Companies look for extra skills in business intelligence and leadership to meet long-term strategic goals. The PMI Talent Triangle includes the absolute skill set and is a blend of

  • Technical,

  • Leadership, and

  • Strategic and business management expertise.

A PMP Certification holder must acquire these skills demanded by employers in order to stay ahead in the competition.

PMI Talent Triangle

PMI continuously strives to keep its project management certifications relevant to the needs of the industry and organization.  In order to do so, it keeps updating the content and pattern of exams by taking inputs from industry experts. The PMI Talent Triangle was developed and announced in the year 2015. This framework plays an essential role in the continuous professional development of an individual.

The skills can be defined as follows:

Technical Project Management

A Project Manager must have technical knowledge of the project activities that are required to complete the project. He/she should know how to manage costs, how to use schedule network diagram, how to calculate the earned value, etc. Being aware of other project specifications acts as an added advantage.

Leadership

It is the responsibility of a Project Manager to lead his/her team for the successful completion of the project. Hence, he/she is expected to possess the skills of a leader. These skills help in developing an idea for the team members while inspiring them to accomplish the target.

Strategic and Business Management

Strategic and business management helps in analyzing business decisions before implementing them. This analysis includes strength and weakness analysis, cost-benefit analysis, legal requirements, market conditions, compliance, etc.

Strategic and business management aims to give fresh energy to an organization for its improvement and help in achieving its long-term goals.

The PMP Certification must be renewed after 3 years. PMI has simplified this process by awarding PDUs (Professional Development Units) which must be claimed by giving back to the profession.

The Professional Development Units (PDUs) are one-hour sections of time that can be claimed by:

  • Teaching others

  • Learning or

  • Volunteering

The certification status with PMI can be maintained by acquiring these PDUs over 3 years.

Summary

In today's progressive world, a project manager has to be versatile. Having competence in one skill isn't sufficient. PMI's Talent Triangle is the combination of skills that a project manager should possess in order to finish the project successfully. Each skill has its own importance like Technical project management skills help him/her to perform particular tasks or functions, leadership skills help in achieving the business goals of an organization, and strategic business management promotes in delivering better business outcomes.
