SAT Math - Question of the day - 11th Nov 2016

What is the maximum area of a triangle with one side of 7 cm and another side of 10cm?

Option:

a.   17

b.   34

c.   35

d.   70

Solution:

Here we are going to use a formula which is applicable for all type of triangle.

Now, it can be observed that sides a and b are constant ( 7cm and 10  cm). So, area of triangle will be maximum when the value of sin(C) is maximum. Maximum value sin ( C ) can take is 1.

Therefore, maximum area of triangle = 1 / 2 x 7 x 10 x 1

                                                     =  35

Hence, option C is correct.
