SAT Math - Question of the day - 2 Nov 2016

Q. If f(x) = a+bx+c. f(0) = 1 and f (-1) = 3 . Find a - b.

Option:

a. 3

b. 2

c. 1

d. 0

Solution:

Given f ( 0 ) = 1,  let's put the value x = 1 in the equation

a(0)(0) + b(0) + c = 1

 c = 1  .................................  Equation 1

Given f ( -1 ) = 3, put the value x = -1 in the equation

a(-1)(-1) + b(-1) + c = 3

a - b + c = 3   .................................  Equation 2

Substituting the value of c in equation 1

a - b = 2

Hence, choice B is correct.
