The transition from ITIL V3 to ITIL 4

The transition from ITIL V3 to ITIL 4

Transiting from ITIL V3 certification to ITIL 4 Foundation certificate helps to understand and add value to all the business dimensions along with implementing new ways of working like Agile, DevOps, lean, etc. AXELOS released ITIL 4 Foundation in February 2019 with other higher modules to be released throughout 2019 and into 2020.

The certification scheme is aligned with ITIL v3 to provide clear paths for ITIL practitioners for a way forward. To reach to the designation of  ITIL 4 Managing Professional or ITIL 4 Strategic Leader, the practitioner must finish all modules in each stream, with ITIL Strategist being a universal module for both streams.

Now the question arises how that can be done. There are many paths to complete this transition depending upon the certificate you already hold and the area you are interested in.

Let us take a look at these one-by-one:

  • If one is having ITIL V3 Foundation certificate, the next certificate in the path will be ITIL 4 Foundation. Various new modules are added in ITIL4 that is an addition to V3. A large amount of new content has been added to the ITIL  4 Foundation that covers a broader context of IT service management.

  • If one is already reached the Intermediate/practitioner level, then best is to continue gaining the ITIL V3 credits till 17 that makes you eligible for the ITIL Managing Professional Transition module. Then you will successfully move to ITIL 4 certification path after the completion of the managing module.

  • If one is an ITIL V3 expert, then he or she will have to complete the ITIL Managing Professional Transition modules to achieve the designation that makes one eligible for ITIL Leader Digital and strategy module. Completion of this module will make one ITIL Master.

Out of all the above modules in  ITIL 4 certification ITIL 4 Foundation is launched this year others are in pipelines and below are the dates shared as per Axelos:

ITIL 4 Strategic Leader Module - more information to be released in the first half of 2020.

ITIL 4 Managing Professional Modules has four modules:

  • ITIL Specialist – Create, Deliver & Support

  • ITIL Specialist – Drive Stakeholder Value

  • ITIL Strategist – Direct, Plan & Improve

ITIL 4 Strategic Leader (SL), the two modules :

  • ITIL Strategist – Direct, Plan & Improve

  • ITIL Leader – Digital & IT Strategy

ITIL V3 is still relevant and still holds equal value. ITIL 4 has a new addition of modules and a new approach to meet customer demands and satisfy them with continual improvement areas. ITIL 4 is an evolution for ITIL V3 and holds the core values of IT service management. So all the credits gained in ITIL V3 are valid and don’t expire. They help to continue on the right track for ITIL 4 certification modules.
